Importance and Significance of Rudra Abhishek Puja

What is the meaning of the word "शिव"?

"शिव or शंकर" means "कल्याण" or "welfare". "शिव" is also called "पशुपती = पशु (प्राणी) + पती (मालिक) " meaning "lord of living creatures", and "आशुतोष = आशु (छिटो) + तोष (खुसी हुने)" meaning "someone who is pleased very fast". The story of शिवपुराण tells us how fast shiva is pleased and how quick he provides boon to his devotee without realizing the consequence. There was once a demon by the name “भस्मासुर”, Lord Shiva was so pleased with him from his prayer that the lord gave blessing to Bhasmasur with which everything he touches gets burnt into ashes in no time. Once “भस्मासुर” got the blessing from lord shiva, he ran after the lord to kill him. Lord Shiva had to flee away from “भस्मासुर”, for the survival. This tells us to what extent Lord Shiva is pleased with his devotees.

What is the significance of worshipping Lord Shiva on House-Warming or "घर पूजा"?

According to "ह्रीग्वेद", Lord Shiva is also called "रौद्र" or "The roarer". The follower of that form of Rudra are "भूत, प्रेत, पिचास" or "the negative energy". As such, during the house-warming or "घर पूजा" we are eradicating the negative energy from the house by reciting "रुद्री", the holy book of Lord Shiva.

Why do we offer "जलधारा" or spontaneous shower to lord shiva?

According to शिवपुराण, "अभिषेक: प्रिय शिव:" meaning "Lord Shiva is the happiest when given spontaneous shower or जलधारा". According to hindu mythology, when deities and demons churned the ocean, poisonous gas popped out called "कालकुट बिष" and shiva was the only one to inhale, after which his neck became blue, whereby his name called "निलकण्ठ". This poison gave Shiva an immense pain and burn on his body. When devotee offer spontaneous shower to Lord Shiva by reciting "रुद्री", it is believed to relieve the pain of burn on his neck and makes him happy and fulfills the desires of his devotees.
