Introduction to Masik Shraddha

Masik Shraddha, is a Hindu ritual performed every month up until 1 year after the person’s death according to the lunar calendar. It involves offering water, barley seeds, sesame seed and prayers to honor the deceased soul, seek their peace, and express gratitude and reverence.

Importance and Significance of Masik Shraddha

    • To remember the departed soul on every month after death – Honors their memory and acknowledges their presence in the family’s spiritual life.


    • To ensure peace and liberation for the soul – Rituals help the soul attain moksha (liberation) and tranquility.


    • To remove negative ancestral influences – Helps reduce any lingering karmic effects or obstacles caused by unsettled energies.


    • To receive blessings from ancestors – Ancestors’ goodwill brings health, prosperity, and harmony to the family.


    • To uphold filial and spiritual duty – Fulfills the sacred responsibility of descendants toward their forefathers.


    • To preserve family and cultural traditions – Maintains the lineage of important rituals and strengthens spiritual heritage.


    • To create a positive and auspicious environment – Rituals generate spiritual purity, peace, and harmony in the household.

    • List of Puja Materials

    Below is a comprehensive list of commonly used materials for Masik Shraddha. Items may vary slightly based on regional traditions and priestly guidance.

    • A. Things from Nepali Puja Material Shop or Nepali Grocery Store :

      पञ्चगव्य (Panchagavya), केशरी (Yellow Pigment Powder), श्रीखण्ड (White Pigment Powder), सेतो कपडा (White Cloth), जौ (Dried Barley), कालो तिल (Black Sesame Seed), गोकुल धुप (Incense), सरसिउं (Yellow Mustard), ५ वा ७ सुते कातेको बत्ती (Cotton Wick), कुश (Dried Holy Grass), जनै (Holy Thread) – 5 Pieces, सुपारी (Dried Betel Nut) – 5 Pieces, ल्वाङ, सुकमेल (Cloves, Cardamom), तुलसीपत्र (Dried Holy Basil Leaves)

    • B. Things from the Shopping Centre (e.g. Woolworths, Nepali/Indian Grocery) :

      दुध् (Milk), दही (Yoghurt), घिउ (Ghee), चिनी वा सख्खर (Sugar or Jaggery), मह (Honey), तोरिको वा तिलको तेल (Mustard/Sesame Oil), चामल (2 Kg Rice grains), फलफुल (Fruits), मिट्ठाइ (Sweets), सलाई (Match Box), टपरी वा प्लेट (Paper Plates), दुना वा ब्बल (Paper Bowls), चम्चा (Wooden Spoons), जिपलक (Sandwich Bag)

    • C. Things from the Garden :

      सेतो वा पहेंलो फूल (White or Yellow Flowers), तितेपातिको पत्ता (Mugwort Herb), पानको पत्ता-५ ओटा (Min 5 Betel Leaves), तुलसी पत्ता (Tulasi Leaves)

    • D. Things at Home (Could also be bought from the Nepali Grocery Store) :

      दियो - १ (Diyo – 1 Pc), कलश - १ (Kalash – 1 Pc), पन्चपात्र - १ (Panchapatra – 1 Pc), आचमनी - १ (Aachamani – 1 Pc), पुजा थाली - १ (Puja Thali – 1 Pc), अगरबत्ती राख्ने भांडो - १ (Agarbatti Stand – 1), कर्मपात्र - १ (Copper Bowl – 1 Pc), खुजुरा पैसा ($1, $5 etc coins and notes), २ भाग सिदा (Sida Daan), टिस्यु /पेपर टावेल- २ (Tissue/Paper Towel 2), पित्रीको फोटो (Photo of Pitri), आसन वा चकटी - २ (Mats for Sitting - 2)

    • सिदादान सामाग्री (Items for Sida Daan) :

      Rice Grains, vegetables, spices (salt, turmeric, coriander, cumin etc), oil, ghee/butter, yoghurt, black sesame seed, honey, fruits, ginger, lentil, money etc.

    • महत्वपूर्ण जानकारी (Important Notes) :

      • श्राद्धको लागी माथिका सामाग्री हालेर २ ओटा सिदा बनाउने । • श्राद्धमा धेरै कुश चाहिने हुंदा आफुसँग कुश छैन भने गुरुलाई पूर्व जानकारी दिनु होला । • ६ महिनाको श्राद्धमा ब्राह्मणलाई वस्त्र, अन्न, छाता, जुत्ता एवम अन्य उपभोज्ञ सामाग्रीको दानगर्ने पनि चलन रहेको छ।
